Abstract

One form of insecticide that is often used by the public is repellent. The use of repellents is widely used by the public, because apart from being effective, they also experience direct contact between the skin and mosquitoes and last longer because of the lotion covering that protects the skin from mosquito bites. In this study, tobacco leaves were selected as a natural ingredient in the manufacture of repellents by utilizing the nicotine content as a natural insecticide in killing the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The way to obtain this material is by extraction with the final output product in a mixed formulation using hydrosol extracted from tobacco leaves. The research was started by extracting 11 kilograms of tobacco leaves (Nicotiana tobaccum) using extraction techniques. Prior to extraction, 11 kg of tobacco was dried. The drying process yielded 2.7 kg of dried tobacco leaves using the sun-curing method. The steam distillation process resulted in approximately 1 mL of essential oil and approximately 4 liters of hydrosol.
